Spend an hour or a day or even a week. We’re talking about the Heritage Farm Museum & Village in Huntington, WV where a visit is just like going to grandma and grandpa’s farm those many years ago. We don’t have room here to tell you all of the great features of this super vacation idea but you can catch all the valuable information on their web site. The Museum of Radio & Technology in Huntington, WV is a window into the time when radio was king, back in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The museum has a rich supply of working models from crystal sets to battery radios to shortwave that picked up international stations. Take a peek at their web site and you’ll likely see something of high interest that’s worth a personal visit. The “Mystery Hole” in Ansted, WV is apparently an honest to goodness mystery. Perhaps it’s an enigma which is the toughest of all mysteries to solve. The scuttlebutt is that gravity has a strong connection with the Mystery Hole. It is also said that people who have seen it become cross-eyed for several days. Well, there’s only one answer, and that involves a trip to Ansted, WV. The Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in Cass, WV has some great scenic excursions that give the allusion of times past. Using steam locomotives the trips provide some exceptional scenery. The town of Cass is immortalized by a diorama model of the town in the late 1930’s which includes working model trains. There are restored company houses that are rented to vacationers. The Coal Heritage Museum in Madison, WV preserves the history and heritage of the West Virginia coal mines. This includes company records, miners tools, oral history, tapes, photographs plus many other artifacts. Check out the company store and the exhibit “A Miners Life - The Way It Was.” The famous Coal Miner’s Statue can be seen at the Boone County Courthouse.
Tim from Baltimore - When I was a kid my parents used to take us for weekend trips to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Most of Harpers Ferry is a national park dedicated to the years just prior to the civil war. It's where John Brown and his abolitionists attacked the federal armory. The town of Harpers Ferry is kept in the same way as it was in the mid 1800's and there are museums and small shops as well as eateries to explore. I go there once a year in the fall because it is so beautiful and a great place to relax and enjoy old memories of when the whole family was gathered together. While there isn't a great deal to do in Harpers Ferry these days it's still a great place to experience and explore with a friend or loved ones. There are some great bed and breakfast's located there and a lot of nice little shops selling home made goods such as candles, art and jewelry. If you enjoy the beauty of old towns in a relaxing setting then you might fall in love with the place, I know I did. The Wild Blue Adventure Co. in Oak Hill, WV is a very interesting vacation stop. They are dedicated to sharing the natural beauty of West Virginia landscape via a ride in an open cockpit biplane. You will see the stunning New River Gorge as few people ever get to see it. Feeling the air swoop around you in the bi-plane cockpit is even better than a parachute jump. The Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia in Beckley, WV has several interesting exhibits. The Exhibition Coal Mine and the Youth Museum are quite popular with visitors. The main gallery of the Youth Museum is constructed from four railroad boxcars. The central exhibit features approximately three different exhibits each year. New River Gorge National River in Beaver, WV has a lot of outdoor activities to offer the vacationer. It is an absolutely beautiful area of the country and coupled with an excellent list of things to do you’ll have a top-notch vacation. These activities include whitewater rafting, climbing, birding, camping, biking plus and a chance to learn about the local culture. Tourists and vacationers love tours. So, why not take a haunted house tour. The goal of the Haunted Heartland Tours of Summersville, WV is to provide high value, interesting tours which mix the paranormal with science and local history. All of this includes haunted walks, the Whipple Company Store and others.
