Flash forward 20 years later – and I was really interested about where I came from. I saved money, applied for a tourist visa, bought plane tickets and jetted off. Russia was great! I stayed with distant relatives and old friends of my parents; I ate the most amazing food and shopped my heart out at Ashan – Russia’s equivalent to a Walmart.

I was lucky enough to travel to many different cities like; St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tuapse and Vladivostok. At one point during my trip I spent nine days on a train – whilst travelling the Trans Siberian railway.

I spent some time camping near Lake Baikal and took a cruise on the Volga River. I went to the Winter Palace and visited many museums - amazingly everything was very affordable.

However, I did have to barter quite a bit of the time and even though I’m originally from Russia – it took some getting used to the currency – the ruble. Russia was amazing and I recommend it to everybody – but it’s a long journey to get there and obtaining a visa can be really difficult. Make sure you have the time, money – and enjoy!

We were picked up by a tourist bus and going through the city I was amazed by the cleanliness of the city, the beautiful trees and the clean air. Our hotel we stayed in was not considered a five star hotel but it was good though.

We stayed in Fort Canning Lodge at Fort Canning, a very beautiful place. We toured the city and went to the botanical gardens. The flowers there were awesome specially the orchids. It was not easy to go around the place as it was too big.

We went to China Town also in time for their yearly celebration as they had this beautiful ornaments and bright lights the lighted up the streets.

At night it was a marvelous sight to see. Singapore is a very small city but there is a diversity of culture as evidenced by the different buildings from Chinese temples to Indian temples and modern buildings. This is a city where old culture meets modern living.

The sights and lights were just beautiful and amazing. I do not think I’ve ever seen such beautiful lights in my life. I’m from New York City so I’ve seen a lot of lights in the night sky. In my personal opinion, the lights I saw on Victoria Harbor, is like three times as beautiful as the lights I see in New York City.

Also, the hotel I was staying at had decent service. The name of the hotel was BP International. In the room, there was a big window where you could see the many skyscrapers in the distance.

We take the ferry boat to Camiguin Island and that is an enjoyable experience. The island has plenty of beautiful beaches and has a sandbar, White Island Camiguin, which is actually one of the tourist destinations because of its purely white sand. I love going there even though it can be a little expensive. Anywhere else as long as there is a beach for us to frolic and have fun sounds good too. Also as long as the activity involves my family and as long as they are happy, I considered it my favorite activity.
