These two excellent outdoor recreational areas are located in Grayson County along the southern Virginia border with North Carolina. The highest mountain in Virginia, Mount Rogers is located here as well as the Virginia Creeper Trail. This trail is popular for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The mountains and woods in this recreational area are full of trails including the famous Appalachian Trail. There are many campgrounds throughout the area including wilderness camping areas. Designated areas offer fishing and hunting. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and Grayson Highlands State Park are part of the rugged and beautiful George Washington and Jefferson National Forests along the Appalachian Mountains. Go for a hike on the New River Trail. Enjoy local peaches, berries or corn from the Farmer’s Market. Browse the town antique and specialty shops. Vacation in June or July and have fun at the Leaf & StringMusic and Art Festival and the State BBQ Competition "Smoke on the Mountain". Stop in at the Stringbean Coffee Shop to hear some great mountain music. If you bring an instrument you can join in the fun jam sessions. Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park was the site of a Civil War battle. Today it is a 134-acre wooded park with a pond and trails for walking and horseback riding. The Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre, in Bristow, showcases an old courthouse, jail, church, cabin and schoolhouse which are claimed to be haunted. Rippon Lodge, in Woodbridge, was built in 1747 by Richard Blackburn and is believed to be the oldest home in Prince William County. The lodge is open for tours. There are two championship golf courses, a mountaintop spa and an an award-winning tennis program. Wintergreen Resort is big on families. The Treehouse is a summer camping program of activities geared for children ages 2¼ to 12. For teens there is The Dome where the kids can enjoy pool, air hockey, a mechanical bull, video games and movies. The Zip is a 900-foot zipline ride that has you flying through the air at 40 mph. You have access to 22 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. In winter they are great for cross country skiing. The Mountain Lake Hotel offers activities like guided wilderness hikes, guided mountain bike trips, disc golf, interpretive walks, orienteering, bouldering, archery and wagon rides. There is plenty of wildlife in the area naturalist guides are available to help guide you in your wildlife viewing. You can use the local rivers for canoeing and rafting trips. Local outfitters like West Virginia Adventure can arrange for river adventure outings.
