Vacation in Venice Italy

My best vacation idea, hands down, was my vacation in Venice, Italy. I had went to study abroad and learn the Italian language, but seeing Venice was truly an amazing, once in a lifetime experience! More than anything I loved the feeling of being in such a historic place. It is incredibly filled with culture!

The one thing that was the most incredible in the whole vacation was the ride on the gondola. Not only was it just how I had dreamed it would be, but the singing was incredibly beautiful. All through the streets and waterways you could hear beautiful opera songs echoing. The boats were so beautiful and even the seats inside were covered in lavender suede. When I put my hand in the water outside the boat on that hot summer’s day I felt like I was in Heaven. - Bethany from Oregon

Last fall was my vacation in a castle experience. I went to Italy to teach painting for a studio there. I stayed at a beautiful old castle in Vittorio Venetto, which is near Venice, and the classes were there also. What an amazing place! Stone turrets and walls, yet warm and cozy on the inside with all the modern furnishings.

When you look at the buildings and artifacts there, you realize that we really have no real concept of "old" in the US! It's funny to see crumbing marble pillars right next to a modern busy expressway with cars flying by at high speed! Of course there were some "not so perfect" moments in Italy, too--my luggage, for instance, decided to extend its layover in Paris to three days!

So my first two days of classes I had to wear the clothes I had worn for my 24 hour air flight....not fun! Another lighter moment was when I first got to my room in the castle, and wanted to use the bathroom. One problem--I couldn't figure out how to flush it! There was no handle, no button on or near the toilet!

Believe it or not, I had to Google it on my Blackberry (thank God I had that with me!) to figure out where I might find the flusher (it was a large plastic box on a side wall of the bathroom-not at all like what I was expecting.

Then one of my students took me to Venice, where I stayed for several days. What a lovely place! So old, and so beautiful. I did get lost several times in the winding narrow streets, which was a bit scary being alone and when it was at night. But it worked out without too much concern each time--I found my way back to my hotel! Getting picked up IN the hotel by a water taxi when it was time to go to the airport was very interesting! - Deb from New York

One of the top Italy vacation spots is Venice--I visited Venice last fall, and fell in love with this ancient city! As a lover of history and architecture and shopping--I was in heaven! The cobblestone streets wind through the town, lined by tiny shops filled with treasures.

It's easy to get lost in this labyrinth of streets, but just ask and friendly people will help you find your way to San Marco Square. The canals, of course, are one of the highlights of the area-sit back in one of the ornate boats and enjoy a romantic cruise of the canals. You won't see any cars here on your vacation in Venice, Italy. Canals are the way to get around, or by foot. There are water taxis known as vaporetto.

I loved it when my water taxi picked me up to take me to the airport--inside my hotel! You can't beat that for service! There are lots of museums and historic places to visit, from St. Marks Basilica, the Doges Palace, to the Ponte di Rialto.

All are beautiful and worth the visit. You'll find many restaurants, most featuring a "tourist" menu in English that is all inclusive to help you with the language barrier. Plus, there is a McDonald's and Burger King for easy ordering understood in any language! Venice is known for its Carnivale, and you will find many things in the shops related to that, especially masks.

If you are lucky enough to visit during Carnivale, you will see many costumed characters providing colorful entertainment for all. Murano glass is another featured item in Venice, due to the proximity of the factory. Everyone must visit Venice at some time in their life, to see all that it has to offer that is available nowhere else! - Jorge from Rochester

One of my favorite places in Europe right beside Venice. It's Murano Island, Italy ( just a mile or so from Venice) - Being a big fan of art glass and the making thereof, I wanted to see the glass factories of Murano. My first misconception was Murano Glass was made by one company. Was I wrong! Murano Glass is produced by several glass making houses on the Island of Murano, which have been producing fancy glass since 1291.

If you are not a true glass lover, you will still enjoy the sights on the island, as it is considered a must-see on any vacation in Venice, Italy. It takes about fifteen minutes by water taxi departing from St. Mark's Church, in Venice, where the taxis run often. When on the island there are museums to tour, and plenty of shopping, where of course, Murano Glass is sold. Murano Island should definitely be a part of your Venice Italy vacation trip. - Ceciel from France
