Sri Lanka, with its tropical climate, is a fantastic destination to escape the cold and dark winter months of Europe and parts of the USA.

It has all the ingredients of the ideal holiday destination - warm weather, beautiful blue beaches, extremely warm and hospitable people, lip-smacking, spicy culinary delights, endless varieties in seafood (the juiciest prawns and crabs I have ever had!) and, last but not the least, very affordable too.

Our destination was a place called Unawatuna, on the southern tip of Sri Lanka.

We had arranged a van that drove us from Colombo to Unawatuna, a journey of approximately 100 kms covered in around 8-9 hours with a good lunch and tea break catered in.

The drive along the coast was breathtaking. The hotel we stayed in was Flower Garden, Wella Dewalaya Road, Galle, Unawatuna.

It is close to one of the popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, Unawatuna Beach.

Flower Garden is a retreat of beauty and tranquillity. Very nicely landscaped garden, a calm pool, few rooms and cabanas so as to cater to just a few families at a time, the place is ideal for a quiet, relaxed holiday.

The staff is extremely helpful, polite and cheerful, so much so that the food is customised to your tastes, if so requested! The beach is a 10-minute walk from here.

The Unawatuna beach is a bit narrow and crowded. You have many restaurants and bars to choose from for some sumptuous seafood.

Comparatively, the Marissa Beach, around an hour’s drive from Unawatuna, is much quieter and more natural looking.

There are enough restaurants here too, albeit fewer, but you certainly won’t go hungry!! Galle, Unawatuna is a good place to shop and spend your evenings.

We also spent a couple of days in Colombo, where we stayed at Holiday Inn. Colombo is a great for shopping and sightseeing.

Artifacts and clothes are available in plenty here. Paradise Road for artifacts is great.

Clothes, plenty of export surpluses, are available in plenty at dream prices.

So we got to visit a few tourist attractions in Sri Lanka and overall, it is a dream destination.
