We don’t suggest that you try to prove this length, but it would be a very smart idea for you and the family to plan your next vacation around a visit to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. Actually, it is so big that the name should be changed to Gargantuan Cave. This magnificent cave system has been honored as a World Heritage Site and an international Biosphere Reserve Site. There are several cave tours managed by the National Park Service. These tours range from one to six hours in length and they include several of the cave branches. These branches have name like Frozen Niagara, Grand Avenue and Fat Man’s Misery. There’s a branch for every visitor’s preference. For the experienced “caver” there is even a “muddy crawl” tour. All of the main branches are well lighted and the temperature remains constantly at 54F so bring a light sweater. Remember, there is not rain, wind or thunder storms in the caves. A tour of the Mammoth Cave is so different from anything else you could do on vacation that we call it an experience of a lifetime. There are some extremely interesting things to learn and see. You’ll see the Louisville Slugger bat used by Joe DiMaggio in his record setting streak of hitting safely in 56 straight games in 1941. You’ll find out that the average major leaguer goes through 100 bats in a season. Your son will want to try out Bud’s Batting Cage using replicas of Babe Ruth and Ted Williams bats. The whole family will love the inspiring film, “The Heart of the Game” and also hear some batting tips for players like Johnny Bench and Jim Thome. You’ll have no trouble finding the Museum and Factory, Just drive to Louisville and look for the World’s Biggest Baseball Bat leaning against a building. Would you believe that it’s taller than a five story building and weighs 65,000 pounds? As you enter the park, you are welcomed by a bronze “Man-O-War” who was one of the greatest race horses who ever lived. This horse symbolizes the strength, courage, and splendor of all horses. Starting with the Visitor Information Center it is suggested that you see the short film, “Thou Shall Fly Without Wings” which will introduce you to the world of horses and the raising of horses. After you have checked the list of special events for the day and looked around the Visitors Information Center the next step would be to take one of the Park’s two hour tours. During the tour of the park your will see many behind-the-scenes of how a world-class Bluegrass horse farm operated. Your tour guide will tell you many insider stories about both horses and people and how Lexington, Kentucky became the Horse Capital of the World! The Mammoth Cave Region of Kentucky has a rich history. For instance, legend has it that Jesse James came to the Mammoth Cave area and stole from some banks and then hid out in one of the many caves. At Guntown Mountain you’ll see an exciting re-creation of a wild west settlement gun fights right there in the street. The action is authentic and quite real but the bullets aren’t. Just hop over to the Saloon and watch the show with the prettiest gals in the West. They’ve got a magic show and lots of country music and an old-time folksy Country Store.
