Being college students we needed to budget our money. Asia, in general, is a pretty cheap destination and Thailand was no exception. We used an online hostel booking site to find a nice place to stay for a low price. We eventually chose to stay at Lub d Bangkok because of its aesthetic and modern appeal, but I would be lying if I denied the fact that the dirt cheap price was the ultimate factor. Our long drive from the airport to our hostel in Bangkok showed us the bustling and enormous city of Bangkok. It was surreal! But it was also dirty – something you would expect to find in a city that large and that popular. We were relieved to arrive at a sleek, modern, and clean hostel that seemed to be oblivious to the pollution of the city outside. Our rooms were amazing for the price (even for five times what we paid)! I know that I for one would not be able to afford anything like that in the states on my budget. Bangkok is great for cheap Thailand vacation spots. The rooms were air-conditioned with a desk and blindingly white, clean sheets. The communal bathrooms were something straight out of a magazine for modern home décor. Trust me, this was no “brokedown palace.” There were so many restaurants to try with delicious Thai cuisine and all at affordable prices. Then, there was the shopping. Shopping is my number one personal hobby; bargain hunting is a close second. It is unfortunate that shopping malls in the US close at night, right when I get all my energy. Bangkok, on the other hand, is a Thailand vacation spots shopper’s paradise. Vendors sell all sorts of goodies both day and night right on the sidewalk. But those are nothing compared to the huge markets that are open at night in Bangkok until at least 12am. They are perfect for the tourist looking for the perfect necklace, handbag, t-shirt, or other souvenir items to take home. Thou shall not want! A bonus is that the vendors in Thailand welcome bargaining. That’s right, you essentially get to set your own price. During the day when the night markets are obviously closed, head over to the mall. The mall in Bangkok is huge, much bigger than the one in my own hometown, and there is much to see. Although items are generally a bit pricier in the mall than at the markets, the prices are still fairly low. Do not even get me started on the food court at the mall. Gourmet food at a fast food price? Deal. But for those of you who are not quite as avid the shopper as I am, Thailand has plenty of sights to see. There are tons of things like Vinamek Mansion and a million more temples to see with some of the most breathtaking artwork and architecture this world has to offer. Among the many sights I visited were the Reclining Buddha and the Great Palace. If you are into morbid things like I am, there is a small medical museum located in Bangkok where you can see preserved Siamese twins (Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is where the name originated) and other medical marvels. Yes, I did drag my friends to this with me. And yes, they are all scarred now. Just kidding…sort of. I have barely even begun to scratch the surface of what there is to do in Bangkok. There are zoos, floating water markets, and dinner cruises among many, many other things. Bangkok has a great night life with many clubs and bars, as well as the notorious red light district Patpong (or as I like to call it, Sodom and Gomorrah). So, if you are looking for truly amazing Thailand vacation spots for an exotic experience on a budget, please go to Bangkok (and do not worry about language barriers - I only speak English and I had little trouble communicating with locals). Or if you would like to sponsor a child, I am a college student impatiently waiting for my next trip to Thailand and I accept donations :)
