The Houston Zoo is an excellent vacation location. With over 3500 animals on 55 acres, the zoo has just about every animal that you would want to see. They also have several endangered species, an impressive bear exhibit, a petting area, a vast collection of birds and a lion feeding that can be observed. Keep an eye out for the large elands and the komodo dragons.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is a great place for a vacation visit. Their permanent exhibits include African wildlife, earth forum, gems and minerals, paleontology, Egypt, chemistry, Texas wildlife and more.

Their energy exhibit is considered world class and their special exhibits such as the authentic pirate treasure artifacts are a favorite with tourists.

After your visit to the zoo and the museum, this next idea would be perfection. Try topping off your Houston visit by spending a relaxing day at Hermann Park. This park is well visited by tourists and locals.

Nothing fancy, just a beautiful setting with lots of people watching, a ride on the Hermann Park Railroad, a ride on the pedal boats, a jog through the trails and visit to the Japanese garden.

In or near Houston - The Bayou Wildlife Park in Alvin Park, Texas just might fit into your vacation plans. This 86 acre park is a grassland preserve along with a petting zoo and a barnyard which is open to kids. The park also has a tram tour which is guided. This tour takes the visitors around the prairie for views of some of the wildlife in their natural setting.

The Rosenberg Railroad Museum in Rosenberg Texas is chock full of railroad artifacts along with old RR cars and engines. The museum seeks to capture the time when eight railroads passed through Fort Bend County, Texas. You’ll enjoy their large collection of photos and reading about the crazy way that trains ran before time zones were initiated in 1883. Just a bit confusing!

The Liendo Plantation in Hempstead, Texas was built in 1853 and was one of Texas’ earliest cotton plantations. Having been preserved all these years it qualifies highly as an historic site. The plantation is now used for tours, Civil War weekends, raising championship Brahman cattle, weddings.

In or near Houston - Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville supplies a full day of laughter and cheer. The festival rolls you back a few centuries to merry old England with its jousting, its strange clothing and its fascinating accent. A well trained staff keeps the entertainment on course and manage to remain in character while totally surrounded by modern day people. It‘s a hoot!

SplashTown Water Park in Spring Texas, near Houston, is a great vacation idea because they have entertainment for the whole family. Some of the water attractions are the Wave Pool, the Hydras, the Serpentines, the Kids Kove, the Luge, Crystal Falls and several more. Adding in the volleyball and basketball courts and the Sidewalk Café you have a winning team.

The Forbidden Gardens in Katy, Texas invites tourists to "Discover the mysteries of Imperial China. Essentially it is a scaled down model of the Forbidden City of Beijing. Behind the initial court yard is a 40,000 sq. ft. area of model palaces including people. The most impressive modeling is the 6,000 scaled reproductions of Emperor Qin’s terra-cotta army and his tomb.

In or near Austin - The Austin Children’s Museum in Austin, Texas turns learning into fun. The museum’s excellent exhibits are designed to both educate and entertain and with more than 12,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space there is a lot of learning going on. Featured exhibits include Notion of Motion, Ready-Set-Roll, a Funstruction Zone. The Global City exhibit helps kids understand there local environment.

The Exotic Resort Zoo in Johnson City, TX is a very special zoo. They have over 80 species and more than 500 animals but there is something different. The zoo is generally populated with over 50% endangered species to stimulate growth in their numbers by providing a super healthy environment. They also encourage petting and touching to allow the animals to become people friendly.

There is no question about it. The Cypress Valley Canopy Tours in Spicewood, Texas will be the most unusual and most thrilling tour you will ever take. These eco-adventures start on a platform at the top of the forest followed by a zip line down to ground level. You get a completely new understanding of the forest when you soar with the birds. Vacation ideas in or near Austin - The Commemorative Air Force (formerly the Confederate Air force) is a not-for-profit group who’s goal is the preserving of historic aircraft via hard work and air shows. They have a large collection of aircraft which can be seen at the American Airpower Heritage Museum in Midland Texas. The list of CAF air craft is an impressive collection. Be on the lookout for their next show.

The Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown has been preparing for your visit for about 10,000 years. That’s because cave formation is a very slow process and it takes the limestone many years to get it just right. First discovered in 1963, words alone cannot tell the story of its beauty. You’ll just have to add the Inner Space Cavern on your vacation list and see it first hand.

The beauty of Enchanted Rock State Park in Fredericksburg, Texas is the rounded mass of rock which juts out of the earth to a height of 425 feet. The park is a Mecca for sporty tourists who love rock climbing, hiking and just plain good camping. If you want to touch something that the Native American Indian touched just come to the enchanted rock - they’re the ones that named it.
