Fort Sumter is where the fighting began and it stands today as a memorial to those who fought on both sides of that terrible war. You can reach the fort by going to the
Fort Sumter Visitor Education center in downtown Chartlestown. From there you take a ferry across the Charleston Harbor to the island where the fort stands guarding the mouth of the harbor. There are interpretive exhibits at the visitor center as well as rangers that will help explain the history of the fort and its important role in the war. While visiting Fort Sumter, include a stop at Fort Moultrie which sits on nearby Sullivan's Island and has held a key role in out seacoast defense since the Revolutionary War.
