Seasonal Vacation Ideas

Seasonal Vacation Ideas #1: Lake Chicot State Park - Spring and fall recreational opportunities abound amid the beauty of the Mississippi Delta’s Lake Chicot State Park. This 20-mile long oxbow lake is Arkansas’s largest natural lake.

It’s a peaceful setting which is great for fishing and bird-watching. Fishing for crappie, bass, and beam is popular, especially on the lake’s upper end during spring and fall. Year-round fishing for catfish is great.

#2: Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway - A great way to enjoy the fall season and the beautiful Minnesota landscape is a drive along the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway. This 287-mile scenic byway runs along the Minnesota River from Granite Falls to Manakato.

The Minnesota River Valley is a fertile region of rolling hills, farmland and woodlands that plays an important role in our agricultural history and our future. In the summer the land is bursting with wildflowers. In the fall the byway is a popular way to see the blazing array of colors as the leaves change.

There are many interesting stops along the trip such as the Minnesota Machinery Museum with it's collection of antique tractors, autos and various tools. Historic Chippewa City displays pioneer era artifacts in the 23 restored and replica buildings from that time. The Carnegie Art Center contains a gallery of local artists' works.

#3: Yosemite National Park - A winter vacation idea is to spend a week snow-camping, backing and snowshoeing in the backcountry of the Sierra Mountains around Yosemite National Park. Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides can arrange a Yosemite hiking tour and they are one of the best in the business.

They have experienced guides and are well versed in planning and executing outdoor winter adventure vacations. You will get a chance to learn new skills such as route finding, meal preparation, analyzing snow-conditions and other aspects of wintertime backcountry travel.

Winter is a wonderful time to enjoy the peace and beauty of Yosemite without the typical crowds of the summertime tourist season.

Seasonal Vacation Ideas #4: By Tim of Phoenix, Arizona. What I liked best about my summer vacation in Manhattan, Kansas:
  • Friendly service no matter what the store
  • Indoor oyster fries on a rainy night
  • Home smoked BBQ ribs and pork roasts
  • Garden fresh picked asparagus
  • Soft sunsets and cool breezes
  • After dinner walks on crushed limestone roads
  • Early morning hikes on the Konza Prairie
  • Being interrupted by a meadowlarks’ song, carpenter bee’s aerobatics and waterfowl on the pond
  • Fields of green, acres and acres of green grass
  • Laughing with friends at The Little Grill
  • Seeing gardens grow without irrigation
  • Watching an early morning sunrise behind a proudly waving American Flag
  • Eating brownies ala-mode at Vista
I’ll return to Kansas someday to spend more time in the Flint Hills with dear Kansas friends. Next time I'll go in the fall.

#5: Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park are traditionally summer vacation ideas. But these two beautiful natural resources are a fun winter vacation destination too. Located in southwestern Utah, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks sit practically side-by-side with Cedar Breaks National Monument in the middle. Linking them all are scenic byways that provide great photo opportunities.

The winter activity possibilities are endless. Zion has many canyons that are great for hiking. The trails in Bryce Canyon are excellent for cross-country skiing. At Cedar Breaks National Monument you can snowshoe and enjoy a snowmobile tour.

There are only a few national parks that allow snowmobiling and Cedar Breaks is one. Warm up next to the fireplace in a comfortable cabin at Brian Head resort located in the heart of the national parks.

Seasonal Vacation Ideas #6: Port Clinton, Ohio - is one of my favorite family summer vacation destinations. My wife and I have vacationed there three times. The first time we stayed in a hotel and the last two times we rented the same condo unit. The hotel and the condo were located right on the shores of Lake Erie.

Staying in the condo was a much more enjoyable experience. There is so much to see and do there, that we plan to go back there yet again. Port Clinton is a charming little town, as are the surrounding areas and communities on the peninsula. It still has that old, historical look and feel to it. Sitting on the beach, and wading along the shores of Lake Erie, was fun and relaxing.

But driving along the historical routes, and checking out the scenery, is something that we never grew tired of. There are several wonderful parks in Port Clinton, Catawba Island, and Marblehead. You can take a ferry out to Kelleys Island, Put-in-Bay, or Middle Bass islands, and spend entire days exploring the sites there.

I don't fish, but my friends that do say that the fishing is great in this area of Lake Erie. If you have children, you can load them up, drive to nearby Sandusky, and go to the wonderful amusement park there, which has attractions and rides for both children and adults.

There is indeed something for everyone to enjoy in Port Clinton, and the surrounding area. We will definitely be going back there soon. For good family vacation ideas, I would say that Port Clinton is my best recommendation. - Jeff from OH
