Search for Aggies on the Shores of Lake Superior

There is nothing I love better to do on vacation than search for "aggies" on the shores of Superior and the myriad lakes in Northern Minnesota.

Of course, I am referring to agates, a special type of rock that looks fairly nondescript until polished by erosion, or split in half. Then you can see the lovely, unique swirling patterns that are distinctive of agates, with no two of them quite alike.

This has become a yearly tradition for our extended family, coming from all parts of the country to reunite for a summer respite in the cool climate of the Duluth area. This activity engages the interest of young and old alike, and provides us with a way to get away from the hustle and bustle.

It makes a nice alternative to vacation time spent at the mall, in lines at amusement parks, or in the dark of a movie theater. Plus, we get the added bonus of a gift of nature to take home, a little piece of our home state.
