Places to Visit in England #1:
One of the magnets that draws tourist to Stratford-upon-Avon is the Old England feeling that permeates the town. One of the very best ways to catch this feeling is to take a walking tour of the town. Several original homes from the Shakespeare days are restored and maintained. The Shakespeare Centre Library holds an excellent collection of books or papers regarding Shakespeare’s life and times, including some original editions of his work.

Stratford-upon-Avon has a romantic aura about it that can be contagious, so enjoy the world of romance around you.

There are three Royal Shakespeare Company theatres in the town with each being connected to Shakespeare in some way. You won’t be coming back for some time, so why not take the time to check them out

The town of Bath, England has many wonderful things to see and do. However, the one that stands out is their commitment to tours and sight seeing. The least expensive tour is the Mayor’s free two hour walking tour which includes architectural and historic sites. There are several other walking tours such as the Jane Austen tour, the Ghost Walks and the Bizarre walk plus a few others.

The good news for walkers is that Bath is a compact town. Of course, Bath has its share of excellent bus tours. Some of the private bus tours include World Heritage Trails, Blue Badge Guides, and Sulis Guides.

Also offered by several of the bus companies are tours to Jurassic Coast, Averbury and Stonehenge. A third way to tour Bath is by water. England has many canals for relaxing, comfortable touring. Two of the many choices are a boat tour on the River Avon or on the Kennet & Avon Canal. These tours travel through several interesting local towns.

This vacation idea contributed by Brett, England - I didn't realize a small town could have so many things crammed into it until I went to Bourton-On-The-Water in Gloucestershire, England. It's a tiny village, small enough to walk the length of in roughly fifteen minutes, but it has so much to do!

As tourists, we first went there just by chance, but after a day we were hooked. It's a perfect place to go on a holiday, especially if you have young children. There are lots of take-out shops and coffee shops, plenty of shops too, for all tastes.

It is possible to take a tour of the local perfumery (which also sells jewelry), and there is a zoo called "Birdland" with penguins, parrots, owls, and more. As the name may suggest, it's a bird zoo. A model village is a stone's throw from the local pub, and there is also a small railway museum and a car museum for the boys. Just down the road is a maze.

In the summer, fêtes are held with much of the proceeds going towards charity, and there is a (bath toy!) duck race that is held every year in the river that runs through the middle of the town. Overall, Bourton-On-The-Water is a perfect holiday for those with young children, or maybe as a romantic break.

This vacation idea contributed by Peter, England - Blackpool is a seaside town in Lancashire, England. We visited Blackpool for a long weekend. We stayed in one of the caravan parks. It was tidy but not much room to move, so we spent most of our time on the beach.

The English call it a "Pleasure Beach" because it combines the beach with an amusement park. We enjoyed the water and the sun and we went on most of the rides. They have all kids of rides from roller coasters to fun kid's rides.

Our most fun was the Blackpool Tower. Her you have a tower with a glass floor that you can walk onto and see all the way down to the ground. It takes a lot of nerve to walk out onto that glass floor. We all did it but our legs were shaking.

The reason we decided on Blackpool in the first place was for the beach but once we got there we found there was a lot more to the place than we realized and had one of the best weekends.

We went to a chip shop stroke restaurant that has a massive plastic shark hanging over the entrance. I have never had better fish and chips in my life and I have had it more than a few times. Blackpool is really a nice beach town for a vacation getaway in England. Both Blackpool and Bourton-On-The-Water are worth adding to your England vacation destinations list.

The 300 acre Beamish Open-Air Museum in Durham County, England has got to be the most unusual museum you have ever seen and it is probably one of a kind. It is a collection of buildings, mostly houses and shops, which have been taken apart and moved to Beamish and reconstructed. This museum is essentially a unique collection of large artifacts.

The buildings all include the appropriate furniture or machinery inside or whatever is needed to maintain the authenticity of each artifact. The museum staff, in costume, are quite knowledgeable and make the history behind each artifact come to life. The deconstruction is a very precise process.

Exact drawings and photographs are made with all of the parts are numbered to insure that the reconstruction is completely accurate. For places to visit in England, be sure to stop in to Durham and see Hadrian’s Wall (Roman ruins), Beamish Open-Air Museum, Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island.
