I have done both, and I usually spend a lot of time by the huge fireplace in the lobby or along the miles of protected coastline. The air is clean, the views, magnificent, and the wildlife, profuse. There are always deer to see in the daytime and raccoons at night! If you are with a group or conference, you get the added benefit of networking and learning. But even if you aren't attending workshops, other conferees can provide plenty of stimulation and entertainment. I once enjoyed meeting members of a "Wizard of Oz"club. They called themselves "winkies" and paraded all over the hilly, wooded grounds in their "lollypop guild" costumes. Another time, my husband was mistaken for a "housefather" (apparently a pre WWII version of a bell hop) by a gaggle of elderly, female organ players who were staying in the same lodge. Yesirree, Asilomar is relaxing and fun! Plus, Asilomar is near enough to the amazing shopping and restaurants of Pacific Grove, Carmel, and Monterey to satisfy practically any appetite. Once we docked at the island we had about 24 hours until the ferry picked us up the next day. The scenery on the Channel Islands is truly indescribable. Nothing can compare to watching the sun set into the ocean from atop a hundred foot cliff face, or watching a seal pulling itself up onto the beach less than twenty feet from you. What really amazed me about the Channel Islands was the diversity on the island. We were hiking up verdant hills and then back down to an unspoiled beach and then into a rocky canyon. All of these were within maybe eight miles of each other. The camping was wonderful with no one around us it was a romantic getaway for my girlfriend and I. Going to the Channel Islands was one of the best day trips I have taken. This is a fun places to visit in California, there was a ton of activities to do, and it was overall just a wonderful place to visit. During our week in San Francisco, my husband and I did all of the touristy type things we could think of. We went to Pier 39, Alcatraz, saw the Golden Gate Bridge, went on a city tour that took us through Chinatown, and included a stop at the capital as well as the Golden Gate Park, and we also went to Muir Woods, and caught a baseball game at McAfee Stadium in Oakland. As far as my favorite part of the trip, I'm not sure that I could pin down just one. Alcatraz was definitely a highlight - it is a beautiful island, and touring the prison was really interesting - there was so much to see and learn there that my husband and I just ate it up! My husband especially really enjoyed the trip to Alcatraz. We also really enjoyed our city tour, especially stopping at the Golden Gate Bridge and the Golden Gate Park. Both were beautiful and were great spots to take pictures. Pier 39 was fun - we browsed through many of the shops, and enjoyed looking around at everything there was to see there. While on Pier 39, we also had lunch at a restaurant on the Pier, which included a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was also a great source of some fantastic seafood. The Muir Woods were gorgeous - it was incredible to see trees as huge as the ones there! All in all, the whole trip was wonderful, and San Francisco is a place my husband and I both fell in love with and hope to return to sometime soon! I have always loved Disneyland ever since I was a child. The magic of Main Street and the general feel of fantasy always make me feel like I own the world. This trip was especially amazing. We stayed across the Street at the Ramada Maingate Inn. There was a separate building for people staying without children. It was nice to be able to enjoy a quiet hotel room and not have to deal with screaming children early in the morning. Upon entering the park we started our morning with a character breakfast. I got the most amazing picture of my boyfriend surrounded by all the princesses. I had to kindly remind him that he was coming home with me. For most of the day the park was almost empty. One of the reasons I would suggest going in the off season. No line was longer than 15 minutes. We managed to hit every ride that day. As it got dark we settled down to watch the fireworks show. Cuddled in his arms I can never remember being happier. The glow of the explosions in the sky, all set to the magic of Disney. It truly is my happiest place on Earth. Disneyland has got to be one of the best places to visit in California.
