Fort do Castelo dates back to 1616 and houses a small historical museum. Tour the Teatro da Paz, circa 1870, a wonderful well preserved Neo-Classical opera house. The Basilica de Nossa Senhora de Nazare is one of Brazil’s most beautiful churches known for its ornate stone mosaics, red cedar roof and intricate stained glass windows. There is also a museum with religious exhibits from the cult of Ciro. If you visit in October, you can experience the procession of the Círio of Nazaré which is one of the biggest religious celebrations in the country. Ondina Beach is a mile or so away and has some nice cliff-side hotels. In town, the historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many old restored buildings. There’s 1657 restored cathedral, a huge museum of sacred artwork, several old churches with beautifully restored architecture. The upper and lower city sections are connected by a 236-ft elevator which is used daily by residents and is popular for its commanding views. The Mercado Modelo is an indoor craft market built in 1861 and has many local handicrafts and paintings. In February and March Salvador holds their annual Carnaval with parades, music and food. The area was settled by Italian immigrants and they brought their love and talent for wind and vineyards with them. A driving tour is the best way to explore and visit the many vineyards. Most are small family vineyards and provide wine tastings and tours. Some even offer dinners along with a local choir accompaniment. Along the way you will enjoy the scenery and there are some old Catholic churches that are worth a visit. One of the oldest is Famiglia Tasca and the largest is the Vinicola Miola. A popular place to stay while visiting the wine valley is Villa Valduga in the town of Bento Gonçalves. Here you will find a family winery with guest rooms and excellent restaurant. The other big attraction here is whale watching. July through November is the time that Abrolhos becomes a haven for Humpback Whales. They come here to get away from colder waters in the Atlantic and to breed. There are no accommodations or facilities on the islands so visitors head to Caravelas. This mainland town has everything you need in the way of accommodations and food as well as companies that offer diving, whale watching and sightseeing boat tours. One of these companies is Pantanal Tours (part of Brazil Nature Tours) which has been operating since 2000. Another spot that Birding Brazil Tours offers for birding tours is the town of Borba in the western state of Amazonas. The accommodations here are simpler as this is a small non-tourist town. But here you have the opportunity to walk the forest trails and see some of the rarer rainforest birds such as White-winged Potoo, the Bald Parrot and others. Intervales State Park is another good birding spot. This is in the south eastern state of Sao Paulo. This area is fully protected Atlantic rainforest, a World Heritage Site and there is an extensive system of trails that provide excellent bird watching opportunities.
