The children’s section of the zoo has a rainforest carousel, paddleboats and balloon rides plus several interactive educational exhibits. This Zoo also has an excellent animal hospital and health care facilities. It is located in downtown Philadelphia along the Schuylkill River. The United States Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, announcing that the thirteen American colonies intended to become free from Great Britain. Thomas Jefferson was the major writer of the famous document which explained to all why we were declaring our independence from the British Empire. This all happened about one year prior to the start of the American Revolutionary War. This is history beyond reading about in school. This is seeing it first hand. This is understanding that our forefathers risked their homes, their farms, their families and everything they held dear for your freedom. They deserve remembrance. She was born in 1752 and died in 1827. She was married three times, having lost her first two husbands in the Revolutionary War. Living in Philadelphia during the years leading up to the war, and being an upholsterer, Betsy was in close contact with the leaders of the revolution. It is said that she sat in the next pew from George Washington at Christ Church. Her first husband, John Ross, was involved with the local militia. He was on guard duty at a munitions storage facility when he was killed in an explosion. This left Betsy a childless widow at the age of twenty four. Betsy’s reconstructed house is quite typical of the homes of the late 1700’s. It shows her kitchen, bedroom and her workroom. She made her living as an upholsterer, and lived close to the seat of political unrest that developed into War with England. Therefore, it is easy to believe that when the need came for a National Flag she would be given the job. America has, in general, embraced the fact that Betsy Ross was the seamstress who gave us our precious flag, and in 1952, a U.S. stamp was issued honoring the 200th anniversary of her birth. Most well know are - Phillies baseball, Eagles football, 76ers basketball and Fliers hockey. These are the big four of professional level teams. Other sports with profession teams in Philadelphia are soccer, lacrosse, ice hockey, rugby, soccer, cricket and roller derby. Philadelphia is also rich in large sports facilities. They have Wachovia Center, South Philadelphia Sports complex, Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field. There is one sporting event that is so unique that it demands an explanation. We refer here to the Dad Vail Regatta which is the largest collegiate rowing race in the country. This is a May event that includes teams from over 100 colleges and thousands of rowers. The races are held in beautiful Fairmount Park on the Schuylkill River.
