North Carolina Vacations Idea #8:The
North Carolina town of Salem was originally founded back in 1766 by the religious and hard-working German Protestants called
Moravians. Today this first settlement is preserved in the historic district of the town called
Old Salem. The area contains over a 100 buildings that have been restored to their original appearance. This is a very interesting historical spot to visit. You can tour some of the restored homes. As you go through Old Salem you can learn about the early settlement and history of Old Salem from the costumedinterpreters. These historical guides also demonstrate Moravian crafts. The
Old Salem Museums & Gardens consists of four separate museums and focus on history, early art, toys and 18th century children.
North Carolina Vacations Idea #9:An interesting spot to visit in North Carolina is the
Cradle of Forestry. This is the site of the
Biltmore Forest School which was the first school in the country to teach forestry methods based on science. It sits on about 100,000 acres of the Pisgah Forest that was purchased and restored by George W. Vanderbilt back in 1895. The original school buildings are open for a tour. The
Forest Discovery Center provides an interesting learning experience about the school and the nurturing of our forest lands. You can explore the grounds on your own or with a guide including a hundred year old logging trail and several miles of paved forest trails.
