I live in Rockaway Park, NY, part of the borough of Queens, which is one of the 5 boroughs of NY City. Rockaway is a unusual place in that it is a small town within a big city. It is urban, yet we are located right at the Atlantic Ocean.
It is a peninsula. One end houses mostly the wealthy; in the middle are the working and middle class (and lots of "special occupancy") buildings, and the other end houses mostly elderly and lower income. It's a mix that provides our community of Rockaway diverse and unique culture all our own.
We are small townish, with local community theater and arts programs, small stores, some nice restaurants, and connection to both Brooklyn (very urban), the rest of Queens and Long Island. We're very near Kennedy Airport and about half an hour from La Guardia.
Not the most exciting, but interesting and nice place to visit.

Ithaca, NY is a beautiful town in the Finger Lakes with lots to do. There are three state parks with camping, swimming, and waterfalls and boating and kayaking access to Cayuga Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. There are wonderful museums for both adults and children including the Johnson Museum at Cornell University, the Discovery Center, and the Museum of the Earth. For book lovers, there are numerous used bookstores and cafes. Because this is a university town (both Cornell University and Ithaca College), there are many high-quality restaurants, not usually found in a small town. There is a lot of live shows, free and inexpensive concerts, live theater. All this and a plethora of wineries within easy driving distance. It's a venue for all seasons.
