New York Vacation Ideas

New York Vacation Ideas #1: Natural Stone Bridge and Caves - Start your New York holiday with a self-guided tour at Natural Stone Bridge and Caves in Pottersville NY. The cave entrance is an exceptionally large and unique formation of marble. Follow the well-marked trails as you explore the various caves, Echo Cave, Garnet Cave, Cave of the Lost Pool, and Noisy Cave.

Other activities include a picnic and play area, trout feeding, rock shop and fossil museum. Watch as your very own geode is cut open with a diamond saw.

New York Vacation Ideas #2: Lake George Village, on the southern end of Lake George, is one of the top family vacation resorts in the US. It offers many interesting events and attractions.

Go parasailing 300 feet high over the lake. Take a cruise ship out onto the lake. Explore the famous Fort William Henry Historic Museum.

Lake George contains three Submerged Heritage Preserves for the enjoyment of scuba diving enthusiasts. For bicyclists the nine-mile Warren County Bikeway and the Feeder Canal Trail provide great riding. Lake George Village is located a couple hours north of NYC along the state border with Vermont.
#3: Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve is a 3200 acre freshwater wetland located along the old Erie Canal in the town of Clifton Park. This wildlife conservation area is a great bird watching vacation idea as it is an important breeding ground and habitat for birds. There are lots of trails for nature walks, hiking and bird watching.
#4: Finger Lakes National Forest is 16,000 acres of opportunity for outdoor recreation. Camping on the three maintained campgrounds is free.

There are five acres of blueberries for picking as well as scattered spots for apples, raspberries, and other fruits. Hunting and fishing is excellent. There are over 30 miles of trails including the 12 mile long Interloken Trail.

#5: Watkins Glen State Park - My favorite place to vacation is Watkins Glen State Park, New York. Even though it is known for its iconic road-course, Watkins Glen has a lot more to offer than auto racing. Located in the Finger Lakes of western New York, Watkins Glen has spectacular scenery featuring tons of hiking trails, gorges, waterfalls, and lakes.

Camping areas are available right in the State Park and cabins are also available. In order to beat the crowds, I like to start hiking into the gorge early in the morning. The main trail of the gorge is about 1.5 miles long with 400-foot walls surrounding either side of the trail. Visitors will see dozens of spectacular waterfalls as they make their way up the trail.

After a few hours in the gorge, I like to take a boat ride on Lake Seneca. Lake Seneca is almost 40 miles long, 2 miles wide in places, and has a maximum depth of over 600 feet. There are two boat rides you can take. The first one is a small boat that will take you on a tour of the lake and lasts about 45 minutes.

A guide will tell you about local landmarks like the salt mines. On the other side of the lake you will see ancient Indian paintings still lining the cliffs. The other boat is much bigger and serves dinner on board. If you and your sweetie are looking for a romantic time, take a romantic cruise at dinnertime on the lake. Top if all of by sampling some wine in the local village, as Watkins Glen is known as wine country.

Watkins Glen State Park is a spectacular one-and-a-half-mile-long glacier carved gorge. The footpaths wind over, under, and around the 19 waterfalls and 300 foot high cliffs. Walking and hiking are favorite activities in this beautiful setting. Camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities are available as well as an Olympic-size swimming pool. -Carl from State College

New York Vacation Ideas #6: The American Museum of Natural History in New York City is a cool fun place to take the family while vacationing in NYC. It is famous for its dinosaur exhibits but there is so much more. There are wonderful dioramas with grizzly bears, elks with massive antlers and wolves. Or the herd of lumbering elephants and the giraffes at the water hole.

There are numerous exhibits like the interactive Rose Center for Earth and Space with its 95-foot tall glass cube. Or take in a show at the IMAX theater or a space show. There are just a tremendous amount of incredible things to see here.
