Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is 35 miles of beaches, dune formations, and forests along Lake Michigan's eastern coast. The
Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a popular 7.4 mile long self-guided auto tour. Both the drive and the
Dune Climb provide the visitor with spectacular overlooks of Glen Lake, the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Lake Michigan.
The giant sand dune is perfect for kids to climb on and in the winter you can sled down it’s slopes. Other things for the kids include a Junior Ranger program, beaches, trails and plenty of places to canoe, bike and fish.

For outdoor fun vacation ideas, Michigan has a 60,000 acre park called
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. It's on the Upper Peninsula along the shore of Lake Superior. The countryside is kind of wild but also extremely beautiful. The park has about twenty trails that make their way through the wilderness.
Lake Superior Trail is the longest one. It's 17 miles long and it gets pretty steep and tough in places. The trail that has the best view of the park is
Escarpment Trail. If you go to
Summit Peak, you can get some really impressive views at the observation deck. Visit at the end of August and you can enjoy the annual
Porcupine Mountains Music Festival which features a variety of musicians from bluegrass and folk to contemporary.
Michigan Vacations Idea #6:
The
Colonial Michilimackinac is a recreation of the fur-trading village and military outpost built by the French in 1715. It is located in
Colonial Michilimackinac State Park at the south end of the famous Mackinac Bridge. You can see this fortified village as it was in Colonial times. There are 14 reconstructed period buildings and with some interesting exhibits and artifacts on display. You can witness costumed re-enactments of a traditional French wedding and soldiers demonstrating their skills on the parade grounds. There is an on-site underground archaeological dig that provides a fascinating window into the past.
