My wife and I have traveled all over Mexico for more than twenty years. Most of our friends would regularly tease us by saying that we only work enough to make money for the next trip to Mexico or other ports of call in Latin America.  

They were more accurate than they knew, we indeed were addicted to travel, and we had become adventure junkies. Now as we approach mid life, we have taken on a new, adventurous course; we have decided to live and play and work in Mexico.

Last year we drove down La Ruta Rio Sonora for the first time and fell in love with the area and decided to make Banamichi our new home. There we bought the oldest hotel and restaurant in the region, La Posada del Rio Sonora and have never been happier. Let me tell you a little about this area and describe what I find so enchanting.

Banamichi is right about center of a scenic area that runs North to South from Cananea to Ures and is called La Ruta Rio Sonora. This scenic route is full of geological, historical and biological significance and is as unique as the Baja Peninsula, but a heck of a lot more accessible.

It is easy to understand why there are so many Missions and Old Mexican Churches in what was the cradle of New Spain. Cities like Arizpe and Ures were provincial capitals of what is now the Western half of the United States and a huge portion of Mexico.

What a rare find in geological terms, stunning mountain ranges, canyons, river crossings and remote villages. These high mountains and winding roads have been what has kept this area protected from the alterations of modernity.

The road is long and winding, with scenery as splendid as any scenic route in the World. What makes this route extremely unique is how you can have it all to yourself, many days I have driven La Ruta and seen fewer than a dozen cars in two to three hours. This could be why many people like the short three to five hour trip from Southern Arizona that can transport them into another World and another Time. It is, indeed like stepping back in Time.

Banamichi and the entire region has enough activities and attractions to keep folks wanting just a few more days, or to keep them coming back again and again. Aside from what there is to do, part of the allure is the absence of many of the typical things that tourists like to do. There are no T-shirt or souvenir shops. There are no real estate companies or time share sales people trying to get you to buy a piece of paradise. This place is more for the Traveler and Adventurer than it is for a Tourist.

If you find yourself wanting to vacation ideas where you can experience, in depth, real, authentic, Old Mexico vacation sites, then La Ruta Rio Sonora could be the right time machine for you.Indeed it may be one of the few time machines left that is so accessible. So come and experience the adventure, experience the culture, experience the era of a simpler point in time; But please, don't tell any tourists.
