The Aquarium exhibit showcases plant and marine life in various settings from a Pacific coral reef to an Amazon rainforest. The Natural History exhibit houses a large collection of birds, mammals, insects, fish and fossils. Hands on Base features thousands of objects from around the world displayed outside of a museum case and available for the visitor to touch and study hands-on. The Gardens are 16 acres of rose gardens, sunken gardens, wildflowers, sundials and many award winning landscape exhibits. The Music Gallery features 1,600 musical instruments including 3,500 year old clappers from Egypt. Many instruments can be heard at various listening station. There’s a live performance area and an area for live music related demonstrations. The Highgate Cemetery is an integral part of the last two centuries of London history. Sites such as Egyptian Avenue and Lebanon Circle show the popular styles of periods in the past. There are two sections, West and East. The West section is the oldest and has the most dramatic atmosphere. The landscape is more difficult to navigate so children under 8 are not allowed. The only way to see it is with a guided tour. Plan ahead because the tours are quite popular and limited in capacity. The East section is open to all and you are free to explore on your own. Another fun feature of Crystal Palace Park is the Tea Maze. This is a circular maze was built in 1870, replanted in 1987 and is one of the largest mazes in England. Some of the other features of the ark include many old statues, terraces, historic buildings, water fountains, Children’s Farm, Crystal Palace Museum, Boating Lake. There’s a grand fireworks display in the park every November 5. Take a short ride on an experimental air-powered locomotive developed in the 1800s. Temporary exhibits augment the permanent collection. One example is an exhibit devoted to “dirt” and included such items as a Dutch chamber pot and a cart used to carry cholera victims in 19th century London. The permanent collection includes oddities such as Napoleon’s toothbrush, Japanese sex aids, a used guillotine blade. Also part of the permanent collection are exhibits that present objects and ideas from modern medicine. Sir Winston Churchill was born here and the palace serves as the home of the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough. The Churchill Exhibition displays photographs, letters and Churchill related artifacts. On the grounds visitors enjoy the exploring the Marlborough Maze, riding the miniature train and kids unwind at the Adventure Playground.
