The Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House, in Mason City, is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. The Stockman House represents an artistic milestone in the career of the architectural genius. Take a tour of this recently restored Prairie house based on Wright's "Fireproof House for $5,000". Frank Lloyd Wright actually spent most of his career addressing the problems of houses intended for individuals or small families of modest means. This is a fine example of his work in that arena. It is furnished with Arts and Crafts furniture and reproductions of period Wright furniture.

Vacation Spots in Iowa #4:
Every year Onawa hosts The Lewis & Clark Festival and Keelboat. This Iowa getaway is held the 2nd weekend in June at the Lewis and Clark State Park. It features movies about the 1804 expedition, buck skinners in frontier dress, bluegrass music and historic presentations. On hand is a full-sized reproduction of Lewis and Clark's keelboat, Discovery, constructed to the exact original specifications and using only tools available at that time.

For 150 years the Iowa State Fair has been hosting one of the largest state fairs in the country. It's huge, covering 400 acres and entertaining some 1 million people each year. It is the largest attraction in Iowa and lasts for two weeks starting August 11. Come with your RV or pitch a tent in the campground. There are numerous events like rodeos, rock concerts, midway rides, games .... you won't want to miss the 550 pound butter sculpture of a cow.

If you are looking for an Iowa cabin vacation then check out Backbone State Park. They have modern two-bedroom cabins and renovated one-bedroom cabins .... equipped with heating and air conditioning. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking .... swimming .... boating ..... fishing .... climbing .... rappelling. Backbone State Park is Iowa's best and consists of 1,780 heavily wooded acres near Dundee. Backbone is named for its narrow and steep ridge of bedrock named "Devil's Backbone".

Take a visit to the Quilt and Textile Museum .... or the annual Kalona Quilt Show and Sale .... antique quilts and textiles dating from 1800s to mid-1900s. The Kalona Historical Village has the Mennonite Museum and Archives, a one-room school, country store and more.

Visit the rustic rural charm of the Villages of Van Buren in Southeast Iowa. Quaint B&B's, campgrounds, historic villages such as Bentonsport with a working blacksmith, potter, sculptor and artist, an indian artifact museum with over 4,000 relics displayed artistically on various native cut wood or just relax along the county riverside park or visit the antique, fudge and craft shops.

Bonaparte, another historic district 4 miles away has a restaurant in an old mill, several antique & craft shops. Not to mention the Villages' state parks, lakes, several campgrounds and many events, that make this area one of the best vacation spots in Southeast Iowa. A feature of Bentonsport, Iowa is the Greef general Store.

This Iowa vacation idea will have you visiting Mennonite shops, Amish greenhouses, trails, barn tours.... its really a great getaway from the big city traffic as the county has no stop lights, but plenty of scenic beauty.
