Most visitors to the Big Island go to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or to the Kona coast instead. The Puna coastline does not have much in the way of sandy beaches, which may account for its relative obscurity. Most of the Puna coast is rugged lava rock and has dangerous undertows. It also takes a bit of extra effort to get to it.

The closest airport is Hilo, about 45 minutes away, which offers little if any direct service from the mainland USA; direct flights are routed to Kona or Honolulu instead. However, the Puna coast offers some beautiful scenic drives, such as along Hawaii State Highway 137, as well as a coastal picnic park for swimming that is fed by underground hot springs (Ahalanui Hot Pond), and plenty of hiking opportunities. Also, there are accommodations, shopping, and good eats in Hilo as well as in the local town of Pahoa. Enjoy!
