Fishing and oystering are mainstays of this historic working fishing village on the west side of the Apalachicola River. Florida beaches along the Gulf of Mexico are still relatively undiscovered. This Florida vacation spot is known as "Florida's Forgotten Coast" by the locals.... in fact, beautiful Cape San Blas Beach is one of the top rated beaches in the country. Thrill to the sight of lines of skydivers cascading down directly overhead....you can watch or even join in the fun yourself going solo....or strap yourself to an experienced diver for a tandem jump. Champion skydivers train here for competition. Tom Cruise and former President George Bush both jumped at this sky diving training capital of the world. Complete with air-conditioning, hot showers, stereo music, VCR's, a fully stocked galley, and unlimited diving for certified divers. This authentic underwater research habitat is open to anyone so you don't have to be a diver to enjoy a stay here, although you do have to scuba dive 21 feet beneath the surface of the sea to gain entrance. Besides the glass bottom boat, which was invented in Silver Springs in 1878, you will find a full array of family fun including a Jungle Cruise, Jeep Safari, Petting Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Reptile and Creature Shows. Victorian furniture is the focus of The Knott House Museum ....See the Broadway style Showboat Theater at the Melhana Plantation. A boat tour is a great way to see salt-water crocodiles, alligators, manatees, dolphins, herons, ibises, and many other birds. Canoe the Wilderness Waterway Trail or rent a kayak, bike, skiff for fishing....or charter a fishing boat. The park also has lots of hiking trails to explore.
