Family Vacation Ideas in New England

Family Vacation in New England Idea #1:

The beautiful Adirondack Mountains of northern New York are a great family vacation spot. This is where you will find the family owned resort, Timberlock. There are no planned activities for the kids.

Timberlock provides a place where everyone can enjoy a slow relaxed vacation by a lake and in the middle of a spectacular New England forest preserve. Everything here is closer to rustic than it to luxury.

This makes an informal atmosphere that the many return vacationers love. You can go on a guided horseback ride, walk or hike the forest trails, play tennis & golf or have fun with a bow & arrow on the archery range.

Timberlock ranch/camp/resort sits right beside Indian lake so you have all the water activities available. Fishing the lake for bass and perch is always fun. You can head out on the water with canoe, rowboat or kayak.

The mountains and woods of New England are a wonderful place for a family camping trip. A favorite spot for families is the Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA, in northern New York.

KOA stands for Kampgrounds of America which is a national chain of excellent campgrounds.

Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA is at the foot of Whiteface Mountain. You will be camping in a beautiful New England forest of pine and white birch trees.

If camping is not your style you can still enjoy the experience by staying in one of their cabins or cottages.

There are plenty of outdoor things to do here like fishing for trout, canoeing, swimming, bicycling and hiking. These are all things that don’t cost a lot of money so camping at Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA is a cheap family vacation idea.

By Malli from CT - I'm writing about The Birches Resort in Rockwood, Maine, on Moosehead Lake. I've been there many times with my family. The Birches is a three-season, rustic family resort. It was built in the 1930's as a hunting & fishing lodge. Its buildings date back to that time - log cabins dot the lake and there is a log cabin lodge that houses the restaurant. The resort is situated on 11,000 acres of pristine Maine wilderness, and is privately owned.

It's a kick-back and relax kind of place - in the summer there's canoeing and kayaking, moose cruises and safari's, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and river rafting, or just lazing by the lake. Families can cook for themselves in the cabins, or eat in The Birches Restaurant. There are a number of guided and self-guided tours, including a wonderful canoe trip in the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.

In winter, there's ice skating on the lake, ice fishing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and snowmobiling. It's a family oriented place - a throw-back to an earlier time. People are warm and friendly. The family dog is invited.

Family Vacation in New England Idea #5:

If your family is into skiing, then there’s no better spot place than Sugarloaf. This family-friendly resort is on Sugarloaf Mountain in the Carrabassett Vallley, Maine. There are seventy trails and a nice feature is they have placed the accommodations within walking distance of the ski slopes. This is particularly important when you have kids that want some independence.

Sugarloaf has lots of children’s activities and programs. Plus they always have special family deals running at various times during the year. The kids can enjoy snow tubing, game night, movie night, Snowshoe Safari, ice skating, sleigh riding.

Also, located nearby at the foot of the mountain is the Carrabassett Valley Antigravity Recreation Complex. Here the kids can skateboard and rollerblade in a huge indoor skate park complete with ramps, rind rails and mini-half pipe in a 10 foot deep bowl. The complex has an indoor rock climbing wall, trampolines, basketball courts and other great fun stuff.
