By Dee, Virginia - A great family beach vacation spot is Ocean City, Maryland. This is where I experienced one of the most memorable and happiest ever. From about age 3, my family would spend a week at this exciting and fun family beach vacation spot and as an adult, I still vacation there! We would stay in one of the big hotels right on the boardwalk where there is so much to do and see. Ocean City is very clean and family-oriented. I remember how the big machines cleaned the beach every night and how the light-colored sand would delight our feet as we ran to the ocean front the next day. You can also rent umbrellas and rafts to ride the glorious waves. The entire beach has lifeguards on duty, always seen sitting up on their wooden platforms to oversee what is going on in their area of the beach. Oh, and the boardwalk...how I love the boardwalk in Ocean City and a large part of it is still real board slats. Its known as one of the best boardwalk's in the country! The boardwalk is 2.5 miles long and ends at 27th Street. You can rent bicycles and ride the full length of the boardwalk, which is always a fun activity to do and more to see than if you only drove your car up the street. And for you walkers out there, it’s the best 2.5 mile walk you can take and have all the wonderful sights to see as you walk and shop! I can still smell the delicious scents of "Thrasher's French Fries" or "Fishers Popcorn" wafting through the air as you walk along. The pizza places also offer scrumptious pizzas, and you can actually witness the pizza makers throwing the dough up into the air. It is fascinating and fun to watch! And you can't forget the famous candy store offering their heavenly salt water taffy. We would always buy a box or two to take home just as a reminder of what a special sweet treat it was. Trimper's Carousel is another famous fixture of this wonderful family beach vacation spot. It is one of the oldest operating carousels in the country. I always remember the intricately decorated and painted animals that would go round and round. Even as an adult, this amusement ride never ceases to delight me! The old hotels there are still charming. We used to stay in the Rideau Hotel (which is sadly gone) with its 3 meals a day included in the fee. Excellent family-style cooking served by college-aged kids. I was actually a waitress in the Lackawana (also gone) restaurant for an entire summer that I spent there when I became old enough. Oh, what fun I had...three glorious months! You can still stay at the old Atlantic Hotel in Ocean City, which was one of the first hotels to offer rooms to rent to the public. I'll never forget the long porches with rocking chairs lined up for people to sit in and enjoy the sights in front of them. There is so much to see and do in Ocean City, Maryland that I cannot begin to tell you about it all here. You will absolutely love this charming and captivating city with its fabulous restaurants, fresh seafood (Oh, if you love hard-shell crabs like I do, they have some of the best here), lively amusement parks, deep sea fishing (if you are so inclined), boardwalk entertainment, or just sitting in a beach chair on the beautiful sand, underneath a colorful umbrella and taking in the marvelous scents of the ocean. I truly had the best and most memorable vacations with my family for over 30 years now and counting. If you are indecisive about which family beach vacation spot is for you, than Ocean City, Maryland is the beach to go to! It’s also not a far drive if you live in Virginia, Maryland, or Delaware, but people from all over the country travel here. Take your entire family and start to build happy memories that you will never forget.
