Did you say that you wanted a quiet vacation, near the ocean with very few people around to bother you. Then you should look into Dog Island Florida. It’s a barrier island in the Gulf, about 4 miles by boat or air from Carrabelle, Florida which is about 25 miles south of Tallahassee. The island is about 6 miles long with a one mile wide max.

This is a great place for artists, writers or even philosophers. There’s a small inn, a modest collection of beach houses with some rentals. Some great walks, some great swimming and some great thinking time. Remember to bring your own supplies, there’s no Wal-Mart.

You can access to the island via a local ferry or via a small air strip. Obviously, however, the best way to visit this most interesting spot is via your own boat where hopefully you have food, bunks and cover from the elements.
