Secondly, the island is absolutely beautiful, pretty much exactly what you'd imagine when you think of a tropical island. I also like that it is very unique.
On Ambergris Caye, people drive around in golf carts (which are so much fun!) and the main street is right on the beach with no paved sidewalk, so you're just walking around on the sand.
Another great thing is that there are tons of water-sports and activities to do. You can snorkel or scuba the Blue Hole, you can scuba, para-sail, cave tube or visit Mayan Ruins.
If that's not your thing, you can relax the day beach side on a hammock tied between two palm trees! Overall, it's a beautiful and fun location with tons of options for activities, leisure, and dining and is easily reached from the US.
The people speak English, Creole and Spanish. Nearly every nationality and ethnicity is represented in this part of Belize and for the most part, everyone co-exists well. A great, inexpensive place to stay for the first few nights is the Venus Hotel. It sits right downtown and has a nice roof-top balcony. Go up there at dawn and enjoy the sounds of tropical birds coming to life and watch the mist rise off the Macal River. Unforgettable.
Eat breakfast at Eva's, across the street and learn about the area in a relaxed atmosphere. Take a quick taxi ride up to Cahal Pech, the Mayan site located on the edge of town.
On your return, dance the night away at Blue Angels, just down the street. Take the bus to the Belize Zoo, tour the Mountain Pine Ridge forest preserve and absolutely hire a guide and take a canoe trip down the Mopan.
There are dozens of breathtaking beaches to choose from on St John. My favorite is Maho Bay. You can pull your car right up to the beach and are just steps from the most beautiful water you have ever seen.
I also love to hike the many trails around the island and visit all the old ruins that are scattered about. Annaberg sugar plantation is always a favorite spot to visit. You can't go to St John without spending at least a day on the water.
The guys at Oceanrunner powerboat rental have been great to me every time I have rented from them. They provide a captain so you don't have to worry about navigating the waters yourself and are free to enjoy the day! I could go on and on about St John. Do yourself a favor and visit.
After tubing I went to eat at a mom and pop style restaurant, where I danced in the rain drinking Heinekens and had the best Jamaican Jerk chicken I have ever tasted. After which we went down to the local market and bought souvenirs, and there were tons of things to choose from including a lot of homemade crafts.
To top it all off, the attitude and the demeanor of the locals there was extremely inviting and worry free which helped me to relax after a full day of fun and new experiences.
A second place I'd like to go to is just staying at a hotel in my town. Hold no responsibilities, but be near home and relax, that would be so relaxing and nice. I would be able to read all I want and sleep and nap.
I honestly love hotels more than vacation places sometimes. I can swim in a well-kept pool and I can work out in a nice well-kept gym. My bed and room is always nice and tidy and it's always nice to come home to a nicely put together room.
