After a day of outdoor fun on the resort’s 165 forested acres you can relax in the wood-fired sauna. The cabins are a little on the primitive side. There is no electricity so light comes from a kerosene lamp, heat from a propane heater and you have a wash basin and bucket if you need to indulge in a sponge bath. A llama brings you food and fresh linens. But if you are willing to forgo some modern luxuries, you have beautiful spot at the top of the third highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains. At your doorstep is all the beauty and splendor of the half-million acres of the most visited of all the national parks. You will have plenty of places to indulge in things like snow shoeing, dog sledding, wildlife watching or fishing for trout, salmon or pike. A flightseeing trip can be arranged to visit Denali glaciers. In the winter a favorite activity is ice skating on Birch Pond. Meals are homemade with fresh local ingredients and you can even have the staff clean and cook the fish you just caught in the lodge pond. Surrounding the Costanoa Coastal Lodge is Big Basin and Butano Redwoods State Reserve and Ano Nuevo State Reserve. This provides access over 50 miles of hiking and biking trails. You can rent a mountain bike at the lodge. Enjoy horseback riding tours on one of the on-site Tennessee Walking Horses. Across the highway on the ocean you can surf, swim and explore the coast on a guided kayaking tour. Some of the other activities include a Kids Camp, Guided Naturalist Hikes and Yoga. This is ski country so cross-country skiing is the main reason people vacation here. But it’s also a great spot to just get out in the wilderness for a quiet getaway. Snowshoeing is also popular. Summertime is great for hikers and mountain biking. Eagles Nest Wilderness Area and Gore Range are only a couple miles away. The cabins sleep up to 12 people and have modern facilities but you have to bring your own towels, pillowcases and bedding or sleeping bags. You can rent the whole cabin for a family, group or just to have privacy. Otherwise you can rent individual sleeping spaces and you will be sharing the cabin with other visitors.
