Boston Tourist Attractions #1:
Many people considering Boston vacation ideas are not aware of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. This encompasses the 30+ islands located out in the Boston Harbor. This is a wonderful outdoor park just a short boat ride from downtown Boston. There are a number of ferries, shuttles and tour boats that can get you there. Explore the islands on the many walking trails or rent bicycles.

Climb to the top of the lighthouse, have some fun fishing, go swimming or rent a kayak or canoe to explore around the islands. There are historic foundations and forts to visit, scenic harbors, tidal pools, shell and slate beaches.

Guided tours are available. For an extended stay there are camping sites open from May 24 through Sept 3. These are run by Reserve America.

If you looking for family vacation ideas in Boston there are many places to take the kids for some fun things to do.

The Boston Children’s Museum is a hands-on place with lots of interactive and educational exhibits for kids. Kids can climb through a 3-story 3D full body puzzle, learn about Japanese culture while exploring an authentic Japanese home, join professional actors on stage and learn about the performing arts.

Castle Island and Fort Independence is a beautiful historic part of the Boston Harborwalk system of waking trails. Castle Island is a small peninsula in South Boston. This is the site of an old (1851) stone armory which is open for tours. There’s a nice little beach along the enclosed lagoon – Pleasure Bay. Picnic tables and grills make a great place for a family outing. You can rent a small sailboat to take out in Pleasure bay.

Across from City Hall is a very popular spot for shopping and dining – Faneuil Hall. The kids will also love it because there courtyards and walkways are filled with all manner of entertainers. You will find everything from magicians and clowns to musicians and storytellers.

Music lovers whose vacation ideas take them to Boston will want to check out the various venues that offer free concerts. Some of the city’s music schools will regularly present free public performances of music, dance and theater. Typically these are student performances, often showcasing award winners, but they will also include instructors as well as visiting artists.

Four of the music schools that like to present these free concerts are Boston University (Tsai Performance Center) , Boston Conservatory (Fenway Center), Longy School of Music (Edward M. Pickman Concert Hall) and New England Conservatory (Jordan Hall). These are all top notch music schools so you can expect excellent shows featuring some very talented student artists.

Two Boston radio stations also host free concerts. The WFNX Concert Series is held in September and features alternative rock bands in the "Disorientation Tour". The WODS Concert Series showcases music from the 50’s and 60’s with their free summer concerts at the hatch Memorial Band Shell.
