Authentic Restaurants

My favorite thing to do on vacation is to find and try the local restaurants. But not the ones that you read about in Frommer's or see on the Travel Channel. Those are the restaurants that are good, but lack the regional taste.
You can eat at a five star Mexican restaurant in New York but it won't taste as good as the corner one in San Diego.
To find the really authentic restaurants you need to either scour the web looking for a review of a place, and make sure the review was given by a local and not the restaurant's owner or if you can swing it get a local to take you to their favorite places. For example on my last vacation I went to Tennessee and had a friend take me to all of her favorite places.
We ate the best fried food you could imagine. You have not lived until you have had fried chicken with a side of slaw for lunch and then have a corndog and deep fried Twinky for dinner. If I had not known anyone in Tennessee I probably would not have eaten half as well.
